For some uses, normal images are not sufficient and animated graphics can make banners or advertisements more attractive. GIF is a format that plays a series of images to create simple animation. In this tips + tricks article you will learn the basics of creating an animated GIF with the help of GIMP.

How to make a GIF with GIMP

Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

First, open an image that you want to animate. To do this, go to " File "> " Open " in the menu bar . Alternatively, you can also press [Ctrl] + [O] .

2nd step:

Select the file folder the picture is in and highlight it. Then click on " Open ".

3rd step:

Go back to " Filte r"> " Animation " in the menu bar . Here you can select the animation you want for your image from the five filters above.

4th step:

The " Script-Fu " window for your selected animation filter opens . Here you can make adjustments to the number of frames and the behavior of the filter . Confirm the filter by clicking " OK ". GIMP will automatically create the animation for you.

5th step:

Play the animation via "Filter "> " Animation "> " Play animation ... ".

6th step:

In the " Play animation " window that opens, simply click the play button to start the animation you have just created. Then close the window again. If you don't like the animation you selected, you can repeat the process from step 3.

7th step:

On the menu bar, click on " File " again and on " Export as ... ". Alternatively, use the key combination [Ctrl] + [Shift] + [E] .

8th step:

Change the file extension to ". Gif ", give the GIF a suitable name and select the storage location . Continue by clicking on "Export ".

Activate the " As animation " function so that the GIF also moves. You also put a cross next to " repeat loop endlessly ". You can also freely select the GIF comment using the appropriate field. The pause between the individual images can also be adjusted. The following applies here: the higher the pause, the larger the GIF and the slower the animation. Complete the process by clicking on " Export ".

10th step:

quick start Guide

  1. Open the picture that is to be converted into an animation via " File "> " Open ".
  2. Find the picture and click " Open " again.
  3. Go to Filters > Animation . Select one of the five filters .
  4. Make the required adjustments in the dialog window and confirm with " OK ".
  5. Test your animation via " Filter "> " Animation "> " Play animation ... ".
  6. To do this, click the " Play " icon in the window .
  7. Go to " File "> " Export As ... ".
  8. Change the file extension to " .gif " and click on " Export ".
  9. Put a cross next to " As animation " and " Repeat loop endlessly ". Adjust the break time as needed. Finally click on " Export ".
