If you have created a long and complex document in Microsoft Word, you can use cross-references to give the reader a little more overview. In the following article, we will explain exactly how to insert them into Word.

How to insert cross-references in Word

Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

Open the Word document and mark the text passage that will serve as a link and later lead to the reference. You can choose a single word, a whole paragraph, a heading, footnote or page number.

Now switch to the " Insert " tab and click on " Cross-reference " under " Links ".

You can now make the following settings .
  • Link Type : Choose what kind of object you want to refer to, e.g. Heading or Footnote.
  • Refer to : Determine precisely where the link should lead, for example, heading text or footnote number.
  • For which : Select the specific heading, footnote or other here.
The cross-reference is created with " Insert ".

  1. Select the text passage, heading, footnote or page number in your document that you want to serve as a link .
  2. Go to " Insert " and click " Cross Reference " under " Links ".
