Sometimes it is necessary not only to compress files in an archive, but also to protect this archive with a password. This allows you to keep files safe and private. Since this is not possible with Windows 10 alone, you have to download a compression program. You should also keep in mind that it is not possible to assign a password to an archive that has already been created.

Protect the ZIP archive with a password using 7-Zip

Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

Note: With this password protection you do not have to decrypt your ZIP archive every time you open it . After starting Windows, you will need to enter the password for the files. As long as you do not log out of Windows, you do not have to enter the password again.
You only have two options to make the ZIP file permanent to protect: Either log out of Windows after using the file. Or you can move the files to a new, password-protected archive immediately after opening them. Alternatively, you can use 7z encryption instead of ZIP encryption. Here the whole folder is encrypted directly, but 7-Zip is also required for decryption.

You should make sure that any files that have been encrypted by the ZIP folder may still be unencrypted on your hard drive. This is how a new folder is created when an existing folder is zipped. Then simply delete the old folder if you need the files on your computer to be encrypted. If you want to work with unencrypted files on your home computer and need the encrypted ZIP file on a stick when you are on the move, you can of course keep the unencrypted files.

1st step:

Download a data compression program such as 7-Zip. You can find it under this download link: www.heise.de/download/product/7-zip-13139. After you have installed the software, you can compress any folder in a ZIP archive. To do this , right-click on the folder to open the menu, in which you select the top option " Add to an archive " via the menu item " 7-Zip " .

2nd step:

A new window opens in which you can access the settings of the ZIP archive. The first thing you should check is that the folder is actually being archived as a zip file . You can check this using the drop-down menu under the point " Archive format ". Select the bottom option " zip " so that the folder is compressed as a ZIP archive .

3rd step:

To protect the archive that has now been created , you can enter a password in the " Encryption " area at the bottom right . You have to confirm this again and select the encryption method in the drop-down menu. The "AES-256" procedure has proven to be more secure than " ZipCrypto ", because there are many more programs that can decrypt files encrypted by ZipCrypto.

4th step:

If you now click on " OK ", a zip archive will be created, which is protected by the password you have selected with the desired encryption method.

Note: Windows 10 cannot decrypt or open AES-encrypted ZIP files by default. A program like 7-Zip is recommended for this.

In this article we will explain how to find a secure password..

quick start Guide

  1. Download a suitable program , such as 7-Zip. You can find a secure download here: www.heise.de/download/product/7-zip-13139
  2. Right-click on the folder to be archived and select the menu items " 7-Zip " and then " Add to an archive ".
  3. A new window opens in which you can now set a password and an encryption format in the " Encryption " area on the lower right . The " AES-256 " format should be selected here because it is considered to be more secure.
  4. Make sure that you select the correct file extension for " Archive format " at the top left . To do this, select the bottom option “ zip ” in the drop-down menu , if it is not already selected.
  5. Now click on " OK " to compress the folder into a secured ZIP archive.
