You don't want everyone to be able to access your ZIP archive and therefore want to protect it with a password? We show you how it works..
Sometimes it is necessary not only to compress files in an archive, but also to protect this archive with a password. This allows you to keep files safe and private. Since this is not possible with Windows 10 alone, you have to download a compression program. You should also keep in mind that it is not possible to assign a password to an archive that has already been created.
Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions . Note: With this password protection you do not have to decrypt your ZIP archive every time you open it . After starting Windows, you will need to enter the password for the files. As long as you do not log out of Windows, you do not have to enter the password again. You only have two options to make the ZIP file permanent to protect: Either log out of Windows after using the file. Or you can move the files to a new, password-protected archive immediately after opening them. Alternatively, you can use 7z encryption instead of ZIP encryption. Here the whole folder is encrypted directly, but 7-Zip is also required for decryption. You should make sure that any files that have been encrypted by the ZIP folder may still be unencrypted on your hard drive. This is how a new folder is created when an existing folder is zipped. Then simply delete the old folder if you need the files on your computer to be encrypted. If you want to work with unencrypted files on your home computer and need the encrypted ZIP file on a stick when you are on the move, you can of course keep the unencrypted files.
Note: Windows 10 cannot decrypt or open AES-encrypted ZIP files by default. A program like 7-Zip is recommended for this.
