A game bought on Steam isn't always exactly what it was imagined to be. But don't worry: under certain conditions, you can still return a game and request a refund.

Return policy

Steam is very meticulous about the return policy. For example, content that was purchased outside of Steam and then only activated via Steam cannot be returned. If you are caught cheating in a game and have been banned from this game by the Valve Anti-Cheat System (VAC), you can no longer make a return for this game.

Another rule also applies to the return of games purchased via Steam: As a rule, you can only return games if you have bought the game within the last 14 days and played the game for less than two hours .

How to return a game on Steam

1st step:

Go to the Steam support page by clicking on the " Help " tab in the top menu and then clicking on " Steam Support ". Then select " Games, software, etc. " here.

2nd step:

Enter the name of the game you would like to return in the search bar below .

3rd step:

You will now be shown some matching hits. From the list of recent purchases, click the game that you want to return.

4th step:

You will be shown details about the purchase. In the “ What's my problem with this purchase? ” Section, you need to click “ I'd like to request a refund ”.

5th step:

You will now see details such as the date of purchase and the playing time. Ideally, your playing time should be less than two hours. The date of purchase should also not be more than 14 days ago. After checking the details, click " I would like to request a refund ".

6th step:

If you scroll down a bit, you will be able to choose the type of refund you would like to receive . You can usually request that you receive your money as Steam credit or a refund be made to the original payment method.

7th step:

You can then provide a reason why you want to return the game. Simply select the appropriate option from the drop-down menu. Under " Notes: " you can add a comment on your justification. This can increase your chances of a successful return. If you are satisfied with your entries, all you have to do is click on "Submit application ". Your application will then be processed by Steam Support in the following days. You will receive an answer by email.

Quick Start Guide: How to Return a Game on Steam

1. Open Steam and click on the " Help " tab in the bar at the top . In the drop-down menu you must now select " Steam Support ".
2. On the Steam Support page, go to " Games, Software, etc. " at the bottom .
3. Then enter the name of the game that you want to return in the search bar . You will now see the last purchases that match the search term you entered. Click on the product that you would like to return.
4. Scroll down the product page and click " I would like to request a refund ".
5. You will be shown an overview of the game again. Here you can see the game time and the date of purchase, among other things. Click " I want to request a refund ".
6. Now you have to set how you want to get your money back: Either as Steam credit or via the payment method used for the purchase.
7. Below you can tell Steam why you want to return the game. You can select a reason from the drop-down menu and leave your own note. Then click on " Submit Application ". Steam support processes this and will then contact you by email when a decision has been made about the return.
