With Windows Disk Management, the drive letters can be changed without much effort. We show you how it works..

Most of the time, it makes sense to name drives according to their purpose. The drive letter can also be adjusted accordingly. The corresponding option can be found in the disk management supplied by Windows.

How to change a drive letter in Windows

The identification letters of the various drives can easily be changed in the disk management . Note, however, that some programs may have problems changing the drive letter. However, these problems can usually be solved in the settings of the respective programs or by reinstalling the programs concerned.

Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions ..

1st step:

First, you need to open Disk Management. To do this, press the [Windows] + [R] keys . A window titled " Run " should appear at the bottom left of the screen . Enter diskmgmt.msc here and click OK .

2nd step:

Now right-click on the drive whose drive letter you want to change. Now select the entry " Change drive letters and paths ... " in the context menu .

3rd step:

In the window that appears, click on " Change ... " to go to the next window.

In this window you can define the new drive letter. All letters from A to Z are available in the list. Make sure, however, that the drive letter has not yet been assigned . Click OK when you have made your selections.

5th step:

Windows once again points out the possible problems that can arise if a change is made. If you want to change the drive letter, confirm with " Yes ".

6th step:

The drive letter should now match the letter you selected. You can see for yourself again in the main menu of Disk Management . You can then close all windows again and the change was successful.

quick start Guide

  1. Open the disk management by pressing the key combination [Windows] + [R] and entering diskmgmt.msc in the run dialog and confirming .
  2. Select the appropriate drive with a right click and select the option " Change drive letters and paths ... ".
  3. Click Change and choose a new drive letter .
  4. Confirm with " OK " and answer the warning dialog with " Yes ". You have successfully changed the drive letter.
