How to set up a WiFi hotspot in Windows 10

With Windows 10, Microsoft has made setting up a WiFi hotspot particularly convenient. The function is an integral part of the system settings. You can also use it to determine directly whether your laptop supports the feature: If the " Mobile Hotspot " option is missing in the Windows 10 settings, you have to forego it for better or for worse.

Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions ..

1st step:

Open the Windows 10 settings via the start menu or via the key combination [Windows] + [I]. Here click on the " Network and Internet " group.

2nd step:

Switch to the " Portable Hotspot " section on the left . Windows has already specified a combination of network name and access password here. To adjust this according to your requirements, click on the " Edit " button .

3rd step:

In the dialog that now appears, you can specify the name under " Network name" by which other devices can recognize your WLAN. Under " Network password" you assign an access password. This will allow you to log into the opened WLAN later. With some laptop models, you can optionally use the " Network frequency range " menu to determine whether it should be a 5 or 2.4 GHz WLAN. The default setting " All available " is usually sufficient . Should problems arise, try changing the option to "2.4 GHz". Apply the changes by clicking on " Save ".

4th step:

Back in the Windows 10 settings, click the switch next to " Mobile hotspot " to activate the WLAN. After a few seconds, the laptop hotspot will be ready for use.

You can now connect to the newly set up hotspot using your smartphone, tablet or other device . Windows 10 shows the connected devices with their IP and MAC addresses in the list. Up to eight devices can connect to a laptop. If you no longer need the hotspot, simply set the switch back to "Off".

6th step:

Once set up, you can also activate the hotspot more quickly under Windows 10: Simply open the so-called Action Center by clicking on the speech bubble in the lower right corner of the taskbar . Here you will find the " Mobile Hotspot " button . You can use this to switch the hotspot function on and off again with one click . The button also provides information on how many devices are currently connected to the Windows hotspot.
