Whether on a NAS or a home server: If you regularly access a folder in the network, it can be worthwhile to include it as a drive. The folder is then given a drive letter, just like hard drives or connected USB sticks. This has a number of advantages. For example, you can use programs to open and save files on the network that normally cannot access network shares. In general, the folders integrated in this way appear in Windows Explorer so that you can more easily access the files in the network. In the following we will explain to you how to create a network drive in Windows 10.

In the menu that appears, use the " Drive " drop-down menu to select the drive letter under which the connected network drive should appear in Explorer. Of course, Windows only offers free letters here.

4th step:

In the " Folder " field, enter the network address that is to be used as the drive under Windows. If you don't know the address by heart, click Browse . In the menu that is now open, select the network share and accept it with " Ok ".

5th step:

Before you map the network drive, you can define various options . If you check the box next to " Reconnect at logon ", Windows 10 will try to restore the network folder on the next restart. The option " Connect with different credentials " is interesting if different users with different access rights have been configured on the network drive. In this case you have the option of establishing the connection to the network with other access data.

6th step:

Are you satisfied with the settings? Then accept them by clicking " Ok ". Windows 10 now connects the network share immediately and mounts it as a drive. If the share is password-protected, you will be asked for a password beforehand . After entering the access data, the drive is then available.

Disconnect from the network drive

As already described, you can easily address such an integrated network drive via the Explorer. Here you can also disconnect the connection if necessary. To do this, simply click on the network drive with the right mouse button . In the context menu click on " Disconnect " to cut the connection..
