FritzBox: Connect a regular cable phone

The telephone facility on the FritzBox is very simple. We'll show you how to do it and other practical functions..

AVM's FritzBox is not only a popular router system for Internet and WLAN, but most versions also have a built-in telephone system. With the, users can adapt their telephony needs according to their own wishes, assign phone numbers and integrate wired and cordless telephone headsets or even fax machines. The procedure is very simple. There are basically three ways of connecting a telephone to the FritzBox: On the one hand, the classic "plug-in method", in which the telephone is simply plugged into one of the telephone connections on the FritzBox. The second method uses the FritzBox's integrated DECT station: wireless telephones - regardless of whether they are from AVM or other manufacturers - can be connected to the FritzBox without pulling the strings. The third method is to connect an app.

Connect the DECT telephone wirelessly to the FritzBox: This is how it works

1st step:

image
In order to connect a cordless telephone according to the DECT standard with the FritzBox, you must first open the FritzBox settings . To do this, call up the URL https://fritz.box in the browser and enter your password .

2nd step:

image
Now click on " Telephony " in the menu on the left : There you will find the entry " Telephony devices ". Telephones that have already been set up are displayed here. Click on “ Set up new device ” to connect a new DECT telephone.

3rd step:

image
The FritzBox now asks you which type of telephony device you want to set up. Select " Telephone (with or without answering machine) ". You can also integrate fax machines, ISDN telephone systems, door intercom systems or answering machines in the same way. Click on “ Next ”.

4th step:

image
Now select the option " DECT (cordless telephone) ". This is connected directly to the FritzBox, the former transmitting and charging station then only functions as a charging station. This is the case anyway with Fritz Fon devices. Click on “ Next ”.

5. Step:

image
The FritzBox now asks you to activate the function for connecting to a base station on the DECT telephone . This differs from device to device, please refer to the manual of the handset to find out exactly how it works. With FritzFon devices you only have to switch them on.

6th step:

image
Then click on “ Next ” to continue the setup. The DECT telephone is either connected automatically or asks you to enter a PIN . This is preset to 0000 on the FritzBox.

7th step:

image
If the FritzBox reports “ Success ”, you can click “ Next ” again .

8th step:

image
The handset is now ringing by the FritzBox. When the doorbell rings, you can confirm with " Yes ".

9th step:

image
The FritzBox now requires a name for the DECT telephone . This is used to clearly assign the handset later in the FritzBox menu. Assign a unique name - for example for the location "Study" - and click on " Next ".

10th step:

image
If you have several phone numbers , you can split them up between several handsets. Each handset can be given a specific number, which is useful if, for example, the telephones of the children and parents or the study and the family need to be separated. Select the appropriate phone number and click on " Next ".

11th step:

image
In the dialog that now follows you can choose between several options : For example, you can ensure that the telephone should ring on all phone numbers. Alternatively, you can also assign specific phone numbers. If you want to disconnect the connections as in the example in step 10, each telephone should only react to the call number that you have assigned to it beforehand. Don't worry: the setting can be changed later. Then click on “ Next ”.

12th step:

image
The FritzBox now shows an overview of the settings again. Click on " Apply " to save them. The handset is now connected to the FritzBox via DECT, the FritzBox serves as a base station.

Connect the FritzFon app with the FritzBox

1st step:

image
The Fritz! App Fon for Android and iPhone ( https://avm.de/produkte/fritzapps/fritzapp-fon/ ) allows you to make landline calls with your mobile phone within the WLAN. This not only saves mobile phone charges, but also the purchase of an additional telephony device in case of doubt. You can also make calls with tablets.

2nd step:

image
To set up the Fritz! App Fon, you must first install it on your smartphone or tablet from the AppStore or PlayStore and then start it . The smartphone or tablet must be connected to the WLAN in order to find the FritzBox.

3rd step:

image
The app now shows the available Fritz boxes in the network. Usually that's just one. Enter the password that you normally use to log in to the router at https://fritz.box . Then tap on “ Done ”.

4th step:

image
The Fritz app may now ask for confirmation. You can either do this via another telephone that is already connected by entering the code displayed . Or you tap on “ No phone? Confirmation with the Fritz! Box button ”by briefly pressing one of the buttons on the FritzBox.

5th step:

image
The app now reports " Setup confirmed ". Then tap on “ OK ”.

6th step:

image
The Fritz app may now ask for approvals in the smartphone system, such as access to the microphone or address book. Grant this. The connection setup is then completed.

7th step:

image
In the standard setting, the Fritz app is set so that it reacts to all phone numbers. Since this is not always desired or in the case of the division of phone numbers within the family, it makes sense to make fine adjustments here . There is also the option " Own phone number " in the settings of the app .

8th step:

image
Select the numbers for outgoing and incoming calls that the app should use and then tap on " Save ". The settings are saved. Calls then arrive on the smartphone or tablet as if it were a DECT or cable phone. Of course only as long as you are in the FritzBox WLAN. By the way: This also works when you are out and about if you have set up a VPN connection to the FritzBox beforehand .

FritzBox: Connect a regular cable phone

Of course, you can also connect a normal cable phone to the FritzBox via TAE port and then set it up like a DECT phone. All you have to be aware of is that modern Fritz boxes no longer support pulse dialing. This means that the phone must support tone dialing. This is usually the case with all push-button telephones from the past 30 years. Rotary phones do not work. Older FritzBox models such as the 7370 can also use pulse dialing, and there are (expensive) adapter solutions - but the method is anything but reliable.
