As an access point, the FritzBox can improve the WLAN of another router. Depending on the model, it can even be used as a repeater..

A FritzBox can solve problems with the WiFi reception of an old modem quite easily by inserting it behind the free router and laying it by cable in such a way that it can optimally set up the WiFi. To do this, the FritzBox must run in the so-called access point mode. Alternatively, the FritzBox can also expand an existing WLAN, then it serves as a so-called repeater.

Use the FritzBox as an access point

To set up a FritzBox as an access point, it should first be reset to the factory settings. This is important to rule out errors in the configuration of the access point. Then you can start with the actual configuration:

1st step:

Connect the FritzBox to the mains and wait until it has started up. Important: It must not yet be connected to the modem or router! Then click on the network or WLAN symbol and select the standard WLAN of the FritzBox . This is usually called like the FritzBox model.

2nd step:

Click on “ Connect ” and enter the standard WLAN password that you can find on the underside of the FritzBox. It is a 20-digit number code. The computer now connects to the WLAN of the FritzBox.

3rd step:

Open http://fritz.box in the browser . You now have to set a password for the FritzBox administrator interface. Choose a password for which the password security bar is displayed in green. You will need this password later to access the FritzBox interface, so make a note of it or write it down somewhere. Then click on " OK ".

4th step:

The FritzBox setup wizard will now start. Confirm with “ Next ”.

5th step:

The FritzBox will now ask you for your Internet provider. Since the box should work on the LAN connection of the modem or the other router, select " Existing access via LAN " from the list here. This activates the access point mode. Then click on “ Next ”.

6th step:

Confirm the message about the Ethernet interface LAN1, which will immediately work as a WAN interface (“Wide Area Network”), with “ OK ”.

7th step:

The FritzBox now reports that you should not connect it to the router yet. You should also check the connections. Since you are connected via WLAN, this point is not relevant for you: Click on " Next ".

8th step:

Now connect the FritzBox to one of the Ethernet outputs of your modem or router using the yellow Ethernet cable (or another, longer Ethernet cable). Important: On the FritzBox side you have to connect the device to the " LAN1 " interface . Then click on “ Next ”.

9th step:

The FritzBox is now set up and outputs the setup details again. Check the box next to " Check Internet connection after saving the settings " and click on " Next ". The FritzBox is now set up as an access point, you get the WLAN when you connect to the FritzBox name WLAN.

10th step:

To carry out further setup steps, call up http://fritz.box again in the browser and enter the password you set in step 3 for the FritzBox. It makes sense to then deactivate the WLAN on the provider modem or router (if available) so that it does not interfere with the Fritz WLAN. Alternatively, you can connect the modem and the FritzBox with a long cable to position the WLAN in a better place.

Set up the FritzBox as a Fritz repeater

If you already have a FritzBox with WLAN and cannot pull a cable, you can use the additional FritzBox as a repeater. The setup is child's play - especially if the FritzBox has already been set up normally or as a WLAN access point. Repeaters "extend" the WLAN by connecting themselves to it and also opening up a WLAN at the same time.

1st step:

Open the FritzBox user interface and enter your administrator password .

2nd step:

In the lower left under “ Wizards ” click on “ View: Standard ”. This activates the expanded view, which has more options.

3rd step:

Now a small intermediate step: If you have not already done so, you should update the firmware of the FritzBox. To do this, click on " Assistants " > " Update " and select " Start update " in the menu that follows , if a new update has been found. The FritzBox then restarts.

4th step:

Then reconnect to the FritzBox if this does not happen automatically. The Fritzbox reports that the update was carried out successfully. Click on “ Next ”. You will now see the regular FritzBox interface again.

5th step:

Now click on " WLAN " and here on the sub-item " Mesh / Repeater ". You will now see a new setting for the operating mode: Mesh Master or Mesh Repeater. Select " Mesh Repeater " and here " via WLAN ".

6th step:

Also select the wireless network that the repeater should extend. This can also be the WLAN of another mesh-enabled router, for example. If possible, use the 5 gigahertz network (5 GHz): this is less prone to interference, but also has a shorter range than the 2.4 gigahertz network.

7th step:

Then enter the WLAN key of the main network below and then click on " Apply ".

8th step:

The FritzBox now shows all access data again. It can now be reached via the original WLAN of your home network and extends this. The device now works as a WiFi repeater based on the Mesh standard. You can put them anywhere in your apartment or house to expand the WiFi.
