Online shopping is becoming more and more popular, and payment is now also very convenient over the Internet. The provider PayPal in particular is used to make online payments . Enter your account or credit card details there and you can go shopping anywhere in the world. But is it really safe? We have listed the pros and cons for you:

Pro PayPal:

  1. PayPal buyer protection: PayPal advertises with what is known as buyer protection. This means that you can easily get your money back if you fell for a fraudster or if the wrong item was delivered. You have up to 180 days to report the problem to PayPal and get your money back.
  2. Data protection: A big advantage of paying with PayPal is that your account details are not passed on to the seller. This only sees your email address. So if the seller is a fraud, he can at least not withdraw more than the transferred amount from your account.
  3. Security key : PayPal offers its customers a security key to make paying with the online service more secure. The security key is a small device that generates a six-digit code every time you log in, which you must enter along with your username and password. After logging in, the code becomes invalid immediately, so that no one else can use it to gain access to your bank details. However, this additional security tool costs a one-time fee of 23 euros.

Contra PayPal:

  1. Buyer protection does not always apply: Although PayPal advertises its buyer protection, it does not always apply. In the event of a dispute, PayPal itself decides whether the buyer or the seller is right. So it is not certain that if you, the buyer, will definitely get your money back in the event of a complaint. In addition, buyer protection does not apply to tickets, services, cars and digital goods.
  2. Phishing emails: Fraudsters often misuse PayPal in so-called phishing emails. In these emails, they pretend to be PayPal and ask the recipient to click on a link or enter the PayPal access data. These emails often look deceptively real and if you have a PayPal account you could be reflexed to click on a link. A virus is waiting there or you are transferring your data to fraudsters. It is therefore always advisable to be vigilant with PayPal e-mails - especially if the sender address does not end in @ paypal.de or @ paypal.com and you are not being addressed with your full name on file with PayPal.
  3. Allegation: PayPal unjustifiably freezes accounts: There are repeated reports of cases in which PayPal unjustifiably freezes accounts of its users. This means that in an emergency you will not be able to access your money in your PayPal account. Unfortunately, we cannot check whether PayPal actually acted involuntarily in the reported cases or whether it had indications of a violation of the terms of use.
