The so-called main board - also called motherboard or mainboard - is the central circuit board of your PC with a wide variety of hardware connections. If you need spare parts or additional modules, you should know which mainboard you have installed. In contrast to the hard disk or the graphics card, however, you will not find information about your motherboard in the device manager. To find out which mainboard is installed in your PC, you don't have to unscrew your PC - you just need an external program.

How to read your mainboard

There are various programs with which you can read out your hardware. In our tutorial, we use the free CPU-Z, with which you can find out in no time which motherboard you have:

  1. Download the free CPU-Z program , for example from heise Download: www.heise.de/download/product/cpu-z-19564/download
  2. Install the program on your PC by double-clicking the download. Then just follow the instructions of the program. Normally you can accept all the default settings and always click on " Next ".
  3. A text file opens after the installation. You can simply close this .
  4. Now open CPU-Z with a double click.
  5. Select the " Mainboard " tab at the top and information about your motherboard and the BIOS will be displayed immediately.
