The FritzBox firmware has long been called "FritzOS", ie "Fritz Operating System". And it really is: a small operating system. As with Windows, MacOS and Linux, new versions often also bring new functions. Firmware updates are a fine affair: The manufacturer - in our case AVM as the manufacturer of the FritzBox router - can use these updates to subsequently correct errors or add new functions to devices that have already been sold. This is not only practical, but can also bring significant added value. The FritzBox firmware can be updated very easily.

Update FritzBox firmware

The FritzBox firmware is updated via the router administration menu and can be done in just a few steps. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

image
Connect a computer to your FritzBox via WLAN or cable . Then open the FritzBox administration interface by calling up http://fritz.box in the browser and entering your password there .

2nd step:

Click on " System " in the menu on the left and select " Update ".

3rd step:

image
The FritzBox now shows you the currently installed FritzOS version. Click on “ Find new Fritz! OS ” to start searching for an update.

4th step:

If there is a new firmware version, the FritzBox interface will now show you the version number and a summary of the improvements it contains. Click on “ Start update ” to update the FritzBox to the latest version. The router will now download the update. This could take a while. Attention: As long as the FritzBox is flashing, it must not be disconnected from the power !

5th step:

image
You will now be redirected to the login page: Enter your administrator password and click on " Login ".

6th step:

image
If necessary, the FritzBox will now ask you for diagnosis and maintenance. You can leave the checkmark active . Then click on " OK ".

7th step:

You can now check the update by looking for “ Fritz! OS ” in the “ Overview ” menu at the top right . The new version number should now appear here.

Update FritzBox manually

Alternatively, you can update the FritzBox manually. This is useful if there is no online connection or if you want to install a special version (e.g. a beta version from the Fritz Laboratory ). Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions ..

1st step:

image
Connect your computer to the FritzBox, open the FritzBox administration interface via http://fritz.box and click on " System "> " Update " and select the "Fritz! OS file" tab.

2nd step:

image
First create a backup copy of the settings with " Save settings " and enter a password .

3rd step:

image
To do this, briefly press one of the FritzBox buttons and then confirm with " OK ". The backup file will be downloaded automatically.

4th step:

image
Only then is the manual update possible. Click on " Select file " and enter the FritzBox firmware file . Then click on “ Start update ”. Then the FritzBox behaves as from step 6 of the previous workshop .

Enable automatic updates

By the way: It is even easier with automatic updates: To do this, open the Fritz interface again and select " System "> " Update ". There you will find the " Auto-Update " tab, depending on the FritzOS version and FritzBox model . Put there the box " About new FRITZ! OS versions information and new versions automatically install " and click " Apply ". The FritzBox then updates itself to the latest version.
