As a fully-fledged communication center, the FritzBox also has practical communication functions. This also includes an answering machine..

Gone are the days when you needed a separate answering machine: If you have a FritzBox router that you use to operate your telephones, you can use the router as an answering machine very conveniently. All current FritzBoxes have the corresponding function. A separate answering machine can be set up for each phone number, so that you can, for example, provide the private number and the number of the home office with their own answering machines. Setup is amazingly easy and takes just a few minutes.

Set up the FritzBox answering machine

1st step:

Call up the FritzBox user interface in the browser by entering http://fritz.box in the URL line . You can then log in to the box with your FritzBox password .

2nd step:

Click on " Telephony " in the menu column on the left and then on " Telephony Devices ". You will now see a display of all devices that are connected to the FritzBox via DECT or to the telephone connections of the device.

3rd step:

Click on " Set up new device " to get to the next menu.

4th step:

You now have the option of setting up different device types in the FritzBox. Now select " Answering machine " and click on " Next ". The option should be available on every current FritzBox. If not, your box probably does not support an integrated answering machine.

5th step:

You can now set the general conditions for the answering machine. Under " Operating mode " you can choose whether the AM should only make an announcement or whether the caller can record something. You can also choose when the answering machine should accept the call and how long the recording time is. If you use a USB storage device on the FritzBox - e.g. for the NAS function - you can select this for more storage capacity in the answering machine. Last but not least, you should assign a unique name to the AB (for example: "Study"). Then click on “ Next ”.

6th step:

Now the query of the phone numbers that should be used with the AB follows . If you have several phone numbers in the FritzBox - for example through ISDN or because you also use IP telephony via SIPGate - you can assign the answering machine to one, several or all numbers of the connection. In the current scenario, only the telephone in the study should have an answering machine, so the corresponding number is selected. Then click on “ Next ”.

7th step:

That's it: the answering machine is set up. The FritzBox will now show you all the options you have chosen again. Check these and then click on " Apply ". If you still want to change something, you can do this with the help of the " Back " button.

8th step:

You will now return to the telephony device overview. You can now also see your newly created answering machine here. With the switch on the right you can turn it on or off as required , which is useful if you only want to use the AB, for example, when you are not in the study. If you click on the pencil symbol to the right of the answering machine, you will get to the additional settings .

Use Fritz answering machine

You can reach the Fritz answering machine by entering the number ** 600 on your telephone connected to the answering machine . A friendly lady greets you and tells you that you have no new messages. If there are new messages, you can listen to them here. There are also other options:

• Press key 1 to go to the listening menu.
• With key 2 you can delete all old messages.
• Switch off the answering machine with key 3.
• The 4 key takes you to the menu for recording a new message.
• With key 5 you can switch between recording and notification mode.
• With the 0 key you can listen to the announcement again.
• The # key brings you back to the higher-level menu.

Record an announcement and then select it in the menu. Call yourself on your mobile phone to test the answering machine. You can then take care of the fine-tuning.

Fritz answering machine: Carry out fine tuning

In the advanced settings of the answering machine, which you call up by selecting the answering machine in the FritzBox menu under Telephony -> Telephony devices and pressing the "Edit" button, you can fine-tune the answering machine. The submenu offers a large number of options, which we would like to explain to you in detail here..

Change the name of the answering machine or assign it to other numbers by editing the corresponding field. You can also select in 5-second steps between 5 and 60 seconds how long the bell should ring before the AM becomes active.

In the menu item “ Operating mode ” you can choose between different operating modes: The options “ Record messages ” (announcement with beep), “ Announcement only ” (telephone hangs up after announcement) and “ Time control ” are available. More on this in point 4.

The “ Settings for recording and announcement ” function is also exciting : Here you can set whether you want to use the standard announcement or your own announcement file. If you click on the editor symbol, you can choose between “ Standard ”, “ Own announcement ” (if one has been spoken) and uploading . The latter function is suitable for MP3 and WAV files and is useful when you want to use a funny announcement. Corresponding files are available on the Internet, but you can use any sound or music file. However, it shouldn't be too long.

If you selected " Time control " in step 2 , you can set in the " Settings for the time control operating mode " field when the AM should be active and how it should behave. For example, you can set that the AM should only be active during your lunch break or on the weekend and whether it should then record messages or just make an announcement.

If you click on " Additional settings " below the time settings , additional options for the answering machine open. For example, you can have the message sent to you by e-mail or save it directly on the FritzBox's USB storage device. Sending by e-mail is useful if you want to be informed directly of new messages on the go. You also have the option of setting up a remote query including a PIN or deleting the answering machine completely.
