Everyone knows the problem: You want to insert a table into a portrait format document, but it is too wide for the page. Or the contents of the table appear confusing in portrait format. Word offers two solutions here: You can rotate the entire table or just adjust the text alignment.

Word table rotate freely

This method allows you to rotate the entire table in Word using a text box in any direction you want. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

Add a text box under your table. To do this, go to " Text field " in the " Insert " tab . Here you select " Simple text field ".

2nd step:

Now select the entire table.

3rd step:

Then cut out the table with [Ctrl] + [X] and then paste it back into the text field created with [Ctrl] + [V] .

4th step:

The best thing to do now is to adjust the size of the text field and remove the contour. To do this, mark the text field and go to " Format "> " Shape contour " in the menu ribbon and select " No contour ".

5th step:

If you click on the edge of the text field, a "rotate" symbol in the form of an arrow appears at the top . Click on it and hold down the left mouse button. You can now rotate the text field as you wish. Either in landscape format or in any other position.

6th step:

Or you mark the text field again and go in the menu under drawing tools to " Format " and then to " Rotate ". Now rotate the text field with the help of the given values or enter individual values under " Further rotation options ".

7th step:

The finished result with a vertical rotation now looks much clearer. Note that you may have to adjust the column width so that the table extends over the entire page.

Word table: Adjust text alignment

As an alternative to the complete rotation, do you only want to change the text alignment of the Word table? Then simply mark the table and click on " Layout " in the menu under " Table tools ". Here you can use the " Text alignment " option - without having to insert an additional text field - to rotate the content of the table in Word. In this way, the table itself is not rotated into landscape format, but only the text is aligned accordingly, which is particularly recommended for longer table contents..
