Google Photos is like a cloud for your pictures and videos. If you are connected to your Google account on your smartphone, all the pictures and videos you take will be saved in the application. This is very useful to free up space on your smartphone and still keep your photos and always have them with the app. However, you can always download saved content from Google Photos again.

Download individual photos or videos

Smartphone app

1st step:

Open the Google Photos app and select a photo or video that you want to download. Then tap on the three-dot menu at the top right.

Tap the " Save to device " entry . If the file is already saved on your smartphone, this option will not be displayed.

Desktop

1st step:

Open Google Photos on your computer. Now select the photo or video you want and click on the three-dot menu at the top right.

Then click on the " Download " entry . If the file is already saved on your PC, this option will not be displayed. Alternatively, you can also use the key combination [Shift] + [D] .

You can create an archive so that you do not have to open each album individually and select and save all the files in it . To do this, open this link on your computer: https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout . Under " Select the data you want " click on " Deselect ".

Now scroll down to " Google Photos " and select this option. Then click on " Next Step ".

Now you can determine the file format and the archive size . Note that archives larger than the size you specify will be divided into multiple files. Then click on " Create archive ".

It now takes - depending on how many files you have in Google Photos - up to a few hours until the archive is available. You will then receive an email in which you click on the " Download archive " button.

You can now save the archive . You can usually find the .zip file in the Downloads folder .

Quick guide: Download all files

  1. Open this link on your PC: https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout . Under " Desired Data Select " to " Uncheck ".
  2. Now scroll down and select " Google Photos ". Then click on " Next Step ".
  3. Now determine the file format and the archive size. Then click on the " Create archive " button .
  4. Depending on the size, it can now take a few hours for your archive to be created. When it is ready to be downloaded, you will receive an email in which you click on " Download archive ". After you've downloaded the file, you can usually find it in the Downloads folder .
