Compared to word processing programs such as Microsoft Word, LaTeX works a little differently with spaces. If you enter several spaces one after the other in the text, LaTeX interprets them as only one space. In the following, we will show you a few commands that you can use to force spaces in both the running text and the math environment.

How to write spaces in LaTeX

LaTeX offers different possibilities to force a space in the running text as well as in the math environment. Here we list the commands with the corresponding explanation and then show you a compiled LaTeX document with the effects of all commands.

Note: The size em used for LaTeX corresponds to the width of a square in printing. This is roughly the size of the capital letter M .

  1. \, inserts a small space (0.16667em) in text or math mode.
  2. \: inserts a normal space of 0.2222em in text or math mode.
  3. ~ inserts a non-breaking normal space in text or math mode.
  4. \enspace inserts a 0.5em space in text or math mode.
  5. \quad inserts a 1em space in text or math mode.
  6. \qquad inserts a space of length 2em in text or math mode.
  7. \hspace{"Länge"} inserts a space of selected "length" in text or math mode.
