Under Windows, downloads, documents and pictures are managed in a common folder: My Documents. Before reinstalling Windows 10 or backing up important files, you should move its contents to the hard drive. Windows 10 does not offer the possibility to move "My Documents" completely - but we will show you which trick you can use to back up the files.

How to move the My Documents folder to Windows 10

As described in the introduction, you cannot move the entire "own files" in one go. However, Windows offers the option of moving the individual folders manually using the path option in the folder settings. Follow our step-by-step or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

Open Windows Explorer using the key combination [Win] + [E] . Navigate to " C: \ Users \ Users ". The placeholder User must be replaced with your user name.

2nd step:

First go to the " Path " tab . You can specify the target storage location for the subfolder here. Either somewhere on the Windows hard drive or on another hard drive. To do this, enter the desired path. We choose "F: \ Test". With " Move " you can also select the folder directly via Windows Explorer. Click on " OK " to confirm .

4th step:

If you want to undo the process and move the folder back into the standard Windows directory, do the following: Navigate to the new storage location, right-click the folder again and this time click on " Restore " under " Path ". Windows automatically determines the old storage location and moves the folder to the user directory. Confirm again with " OK ".

quick start Guide

  1. Open Windows Explorer using the key combination [Win] + [E].
  2. Navigate to " C: \ Users \ Users ". Replace "user" with your username.
  3. Now right-click on the subfolder to be moved from "My Documents".
  4. Select " Properties " in the context menu .
  5. Navigate to the " Path " tab .
  6. Here you now define the future path of the subfolder from "My Documents".
