If you're new to Twitter, you might be wondering what a "retweet" is. Like so much in Twitter jargon, this is a strange-sounding term that may be confusing at first. But don't worry, we will explain everything you need to know.

Definition of retweet

A retweet is when someone republishes another Twitter user's post or forwards it to their own Twitter followers. Retweets are usually credited to their original authors, encouraging users to create shareable content that adds to their Twitter footprint. The term "retweet" is easy to remember because it sounds a lot like "repeat" and you are repeating the other user's post, so to speak. A retweet can be abbreviated with "RT".

You retweet when you want to spread information or the opinion of another user - be it to agree to the tweet or to criticize it. If you post a retweet on your timeline without comment, you are automatically spreading the information of another user among your followers.

If you yourself are retweeted by another user, your own reach increases and may generate new followers for you.

How do you do a retweet?

Retweet is very easy. In general, all you have to do is look for the double-arrow retweet button that appears under each tweet and click or tap on it. There you can also see how often the tweet has already been shared by other users..

You have the option of adding your own message to the retweet before it is saved in your profile. You can also just leave it blank and post it without comment. The user's tweet is then automatically embedded in your profile. The original tweet writer will then receive a notification that you've shared their tweet.
