A long message can quickly become confusing on WhatsApp. It is then helpful to highlight certain words using formatting. Four options are available to you: It is not only possible to write the text in bold, but also in italics, strikethrough or typewriter. There are either certain characters that you put in front of and behind the text, or a button that appears when you mark a section of text. The formatting works on an Android smartphone as well as on an iPhone. That's how it's done:

Manually format text by characters

You can of course also do the formatting manually using characters you have typed in yourself . For bold text , type an asterisk (*) in front of and behind the text. To make the text appear italic , use an underscore (_) in front of and behind the text. For strikethrough text, choose a tilde (~). To display the text in a typewriter font , put three grave accents (`` '') in front of and behind the text. Here is a listing showing the characters mentioned:

Mark the text and format it with the button

If you are on the move and you no longer know the characters that are necessary for formatting, WhatsApp has set up a nice function with which you can format the text anyway. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at our quick start guide ..

1st step:

Tap with your finger on the word that you want to highlight and hold the position down a little longer. The " Select " and " All " buttons appear . Select " Select " here and mark all the words that should be formatted.

Four different formatting options appear. In our example we tap on " fat". The " Monospace " button lets the text appear in a typewriter font.

4th step:

You will now see that asterisks have been inserted before and after the text. The text already appears in the desired formatting in the text field. If you send this now, the asterisks will remain invisible and only the formatted text will be sent.

Brief instructions: Mark the text and format it using the button

  1. Highlight the word in WhatsApp that you want to change the formatting.
  2. A button with " B I U " appears above the word . Tap on it and select your desired formatting.
  3. The formatting now appears in the text field as a gray character in front of and behind the word . When you send the message, only the formatting remains. The characters cannot be seen in the sent message.
