Microsoft Excel makes the evaluation and preparation of data much easier. This also applies to the creation of diagrams, but in particular the presentation of data as a histogram requires a few preparatory steps. How exactly you can create a histogram in Excel, learn from this article.

To be able to create a histogram with Excel, you must have activated the " Analysis functions " add-in . If this is already the case for you, you can skip to step 4..

Go to the " File " tab and click " Options ".

This will open the Excel options. Click on " Add-Ins " in the menu bar . In the drop-down menu next to " Manage ", select " Excel Add-Ins " and click " Go ... ".

In the new " Add-Ins " window, check " Analysis functions " and confirm with " OK ".

Also click OK in the Excel Options to close the window. You now have to prepare your data in your file overview so that Excel can analyze it. Write the data you have collected in one line one below the other. Independently of this, you write your container in a further line , i.e. answer options 1 to 5 for a questionnaire, for example.

Switch to the " Data " tab and click on " Data analysis " in the " Analysis " area.

In the new window, select " Histogram " from the list and click " OK ".

In the " Histogram " window you must first define the entry. To do this, click in the field next to " Input area " and enter the area in which the data you have collected can be found. In the field next to " Class area ", enter the area in which your containers can be found. If you have labeled the lines, as in our example, check the box next to " Labels ". In the " Output "You can now specify where the histogram is to be output: Select an area in your worksheet, create a new worksheet or a new workbook. To create a histogram, you must also check" Diagram display ".

Finally, a table with the frequencies of your containers and a histogram that graphically displays this data is displayed at the point you selected.

quick start Guide

  1. Open the add-ins settings via " File "> " Options "> " Add-Ins ".
  2. Next to " Manage " select " Excel Add-Ins " from the drop-down menu and click " Go ... ".
  3. If not yet available, check the " Analysis functions " box and click " OK ".
  4. Now write your collected data one below the other in one line and the containers in another so that Excel can interpret them correctly.
  5. Under the " Data " tab, click on " Data analysis " in the " Analysis " area.
  6. Select " Histogram " from the list and click " OK ".
  7. Enter your data next to " Input area " and your container next to " Class area ". If you have added a label above the data, check the box next to " Labels ". Under " Output ", select where the histogram should be output and check " Diagram creation " so that a histogram is output. Finally, click OK to have Excel create the chart.
