Are you writing a Word document that you would like to add page numbers to, but should only start from page 3 because you have a cover sheet and table of contents beforehand, for example? We will show you how to do this in just a few steps in the following instructions.

Follow our step-by-step instructions , the quick start guide or the explanatory video .

1st step: insert breaks

Click at the end of the text on the second page . Now select the item " (Page) Layout " in the tab , click on " Breaks " and then on " Next page ". If necessary, the text on the third page has now slipped down. You can bring it back up by deleting the paragraph with the [Backspace] key [ ].

Step 2: Unlink the footers

Then double-click on the lower edge (footer) of the third page and deactivate the " Link to previous " item in the menu .

3rd step: insert page number

Then click on " Page number " in the same menu to insert one. Choose whether the page numbers should be at the top or bottom of the page. You can also specify the position of the page number in the header or footer. The numbering now starts automatically with the page number 3 . If you want to start with 1 , please follow the steps below:

You click on " Page Number " again and then on " Format Page Numbers ".

Select " Start at: " and enter a " 1 " or any other number you want and confirm with " Ok ".
