Would you like to export your saved passwords from Firefox so that you can use them on another device? We'll show you how..

Mozilla Firefox will automatically save your passwords upon request . In newer browser versions, the passwords are also managed via the so-called Firefox Lockwise. At the same time, the saved passwords are recorded in a local profile. If you now want to export the access data, you can either pull the passwords as clear text from Firefox Lockwise or save the profile folder - the second option, however, only allows the import in the same browser. We explain both methods below.

Export passwords via Firefox Lockwise

Firefox Lockwise is a password manager service from Mozilla, with which you can use your passwords on all your devices via sync. The online function is optional - passwords can also only be saved locally and are therefore more secure against unauthorized access. You can export your access data as a CSV file and import it into other browsers or into a new Firefox installation. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

First click on the three-line menu at the top right and select " Access data and passwords ". Alternatively, you can also enter " about: logins " in the URL field .

2nd step:

Firefox Lockwise will now open. Here click on the three-point menu and then on " Export access data ".

3rd step:

Since your passwords and access data are saved as readable text in a CSV file, Firefox warns you of possible risks. Our tip: Save the file on a protected USB stick or delete it after you have re-imported the passwords. Click on " Export ".

4th step:

If requested, enter your administrator data. Then choose a storage location for the file and click " Save ". If you now install Firefox on another device, you can easily re-import the saved CSV file in Firefox Lockwise or another browser such as Google Chrome. Remember, however, that the passwords in this file are in clear text and should not fall into the wrong hands. Tip : You can find out how to import passwords in Chrome as CSV files here.

Note for the import: If the entry " Import credentials from file " is not available in the Firefox Lockwise menu, the function may be deactivated. Activate this via the Firefox configuration editor (about: config). There you change the setting for " signon.management.page.fileImport.enabled " to " true "..

Firefox: Export passwords through the profile folder

1st step:

image
Press the [Windows] + [R] keys to open the Run menu. Then type " % appdata% \ Mozilla \ Firefox" into the field and press " OK ". Then open the " Profiles " folder .

2nd step:

Normally you will now see a single folder with the ending " .default ". Copy this folder by highlighting it and pressing [Ctrl] + [C]. Choose a suitable storage location, for example a USB storage medium. Paste the folder there with [Ctrl] + [V] . Note: To import the profile into another Firefox browser, you must repeat step 1 on the other computer. Now copy the profile folder from your storage medium here and delete other "[folder name] .default" files if necessary.

There is a file called " Profil.ini " where you copied the Profiles folder . Open this and change the option " Path = Profiles / " so that you write the name of the inserted folder here, ie: " Path = Profiles / [Folder name.default] ".
