With iOS 14, Apple introduced a number of new functions that allow you to customize your iPhone home screen more than ever before. In addition to your own widgets, you can now add your own app icons to the home screen, giving your smartphone a completely unique look. You can find out exactly how both work in this guide.

How to create your own widgets with Widgetsmith

Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions ..

1st step

Download the free “Widgetsmith” app from the App Store and open it. On the start page you have the option of creating widgets in various sizes. Pick a size and tap on it. If you have already created a widget of the desired size and would like to design a new one, tap on " Add Small / Medium / Large Widget ".

So that you can recognize the widget better later, tap on " tap to rename " and enter a name. To customize the widget's default view, tap it .

Here you can adjust the function of the widget . You have the choice between free variants such as clocks, calendars, reminders and much more. If you are ready to spend money, you also have access to a weather overview. You can then select the font , font color , background color and outline color of the widget for most functions . Customize the widget to your liking, and then tap the back arrow in the top left corner.

4th step

In the edit view, tap on “ Save ”. Now go to your homescreen and add a new widget from Widgetsmith in the size you just designed. Slide it where you want it and click " Done ".

If you don't see the right feature or theme, you have probably already created multiple widgets in Widgetsmith and need to choose the right theme. To do this, press and hold the widget briefly and then tap on " Edit widget ". Tap " Widget " and then in the list to the desired design .

How to change your app icons

First, look for an alternative version of the app icon from the Internet (tip: Pinterest, Etsy or simply Google) or create your own design. Save the icon as a picture in your iPhone's photo album . The picture should be square and have a resolution of at least 300x300. Then open the Shortcuts app, which should already be installed on your iPhone. Tap the " + " symbol in the top right corner.

Now select " Scripts " from the categories in the upper area .

In the list go to the " Open app " function under " Apps ".

Then tap on " Select ". You will now be shown a list of all available apps. Find the app you want to change the logo for and tap on it. Then go to " Next " in the upper right corner .

Enter a name for the shortcut. This does not yet appear on the home screen and is only used so that you can find the shortcut in the app later. Then tap on " Done ".

Now go to " To Home Screen ".

Tap the icon of the shortcut under the " name and icon for the home screen " and then "to select photo ." Now you can select the desired app icon from your photo album to select and cut .
