Would you like to delete messages from Messenger or Facebook chat? We show you how it works..

You don't want to save every conversation on Facebook permanently. Fortunately, you can remove conversations from both your browser and your smartphone. We will show you the different ways:

Delete Facebook messages in the browser

There are two ways to remove messages from Facebook through the browser. You can either delete this via the chat window or from the message inbox (Messenger). We show you both ways:

1st step:

To open the chat window, click the message icon in the top right corner. All messages are displayed chronologically. Now select the conversation that you want to delete.

2nd step:

Your selected chat opens at the bottom of the browser and you can now click on the down arrow next to the name (in the old Facebook design, on the settings symbol ). Scroll down and select " Delete Conversation ... ".

3rd step:

You will be asked again for confirmation. Click Delete Conversation . The chat is now permanently deleted. Alternatively , Facebook conversations can also be deleted via Messenger . To do this, you should follow these steps:

1st step:

On the Facebook homepage, click Messenger on the left . If this is not displayed, first click on " Show more ".

2nd step:

Your messages are listed chronologically on the left. Select the conversation you want to delete and click the Settings icon (three dots) on the right. Then go to " Delete " in the menu .

3rd step:

A new window is opening up. Click on " Delete " again. The conversation has now been permanently removed.

Open the Facebook Messenger app on your Android device. Find the conversation you want to delete and press and hold the conversation with your finger.

2nd step:

In the menu tap on the red trash can symbol .

3rd step:

You will be asked for confirmation and tap on " Delete ". The conversation has now been removed from your messenger.

1st step:

Open the Facebook Messenger app on your iPhone or iPad. Now select the conversation that you want to delete. Press and hold the message until a menu at the bottom opens.

2nd step:

In the menu, tap Delete Conversation .

3rd step:

Tap Delete Conversation one more time to confirm . Alternatively, you can archive the message. The previously selected conversation is now removed from the messenger.

1. Open Facebook in your browser. Click the message icon in the upper right corner.
2. Select the conversation that you want to delete. This is displayed as a single chat at the bottom of the browser.
3. In the chat, click on the settings icon in the upper right corner (in the new Facebook design, on the down arrow next to the name) and select " Delete conversation ... ".
4. A new window is opening up. Click Delete Conversation to confirm .

Alternative: delete messages in the message inbox

1. Open Facebook in your browser. Click on " Messenger " in the menu on the left .
2. Find the conversation that you want to delete.
3. Click on the settings symbol (three dots) and select " Delete ".
4. Confirm the process by clicking on " Delete ".

2. Find the conversation that you want to delete and hold it down for a longer period of time.
3. Tap the trash can icon .
