In other browsers, the reading mode is sometimes already directly available. This is a stripped-down version of the website - without a complicated design, lots of colors and, above all, without advertising. So far, Google Chrome has only run it experimentally, so you cannot simply activate the reading view in the settings. However, there is a method you can use to read websites in Reader Mode. The following instructions explain how to do this - and not only work for the computer version, but also for Google Chrome Android on the smartphone!

Google Chrome: Go to reading mode

Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

Open Google Chrome. Then enter " chrome: flags " in the address line above . Below you will find the setting for " Reader Mode ". Click on the adjacent drop-down menu and select " Enabled ".

2nd step:

Once you've changed the setting, Chrome should restart. You can do this directly using the " Relaunch " button .

3rd step:

When you restart Chrome, Reading view is now active. However, it is not displayed on all pages. Instead, the associated icon only appears on pages for which Chrome considers a reader mode to be appropriate. Then a small icon appears in the top right of the address bar that looks like a newspaper or a book . Click on it.

4th step:

As soon as you click the symbol, the reading mode is activated. You can see the direct comparison between step 3 and step 4 of these instructions. Due to the simplified representation, the reading mode is also very suitable for printing. If you have enough of the simple view, you can return to the normal view by clicking the icon again.

quick start Guide

  1. Open Google Chrome and enter " chrome: flags " in the address bar .
  2. Scroll down there until you see " Enable Reader Mode ". On the right is a drop-down menu that says " Default ". Select the " Enabled " option here .
  3. You can restart the browser via " Relaunch ". A restart is necessary to apply the changed setting.
  4. Even if the icon for reading mode is not always visible, it is now activated. The option is only displayed for pages for which Chrome considers reading mode to be possible or important. If you are on such a website, you will see a small icon at the top of the address bar that looks like a book or newspaper. With a click on it it turns blue and your browser shows the requested page in reader mode. If you click the symbol again, you will return to the regular web view.
