Would you like to erase your memory card reliably? All you need is an SD card slot in the PC or laptop to format the card. Of course, an external SD card reader also works. In this tipps + tricks article, we will show you how to format the SD card.

Tip: If you want to format the SD card on Android, read this post.

Before you can start formatting, you have to select the actual file system of the card. We have a 64GB SD card and we need to select "exFAT ". For smaller cards, FAT32 is also an option. If you would like to find out more about the different formats, read our note . Optionally, enter a volume description and click " Start ". Your SD card will now be formatted and all data will be removed from it.

Note: A crucial difference is the compatibility of the file system - FAT32 is more compatible with other systems. Note, however, that FAT32 is only supported by SD cards with a capacity of less than 32 GB and it is not possible to save or transfer individual files that are larger than 4 GB. Here you have to resort to the exFAT file system. A simple rule of thumb: if your memory card has a capacity of more than 32 GB, it should be formatted with exFAT.

quick start Guide

  1. Connect the SD card to be formatted to your Windows PC.
  2. Open the Explorer with [Windows] + [E] .
  3. Right click on the SD card and select " Format ".
  4. Define the file system of the card. More on this in our note .
  5. You can also optionally enter a volume designation .
  6. With " Start " the formatting of the SD card begins. When the process is complete, you will have a blank SD card with no files whatsoever.
