Device drivers are important because they allow hardware and software to work together. So you should make sure that your drivers are always up to date. But what if you want to reinstall Windows 10? Or if a driver no longer works properly after an update? Then it makes sense if you have a backup of your device drivers that you can restore. And we'll show you how to make one.

How to back up your drivers

Open the command prompt as an administrator. To do this, use the Windows search and enter " Command Prompt ". Then click on "Run as administrator ". Confirm that you are admin.

2nd step:

First, create the " driverbackup " folder in the C drive where the backup will be saved. You can of course also name the folder individually. Then enter the command DISM / online / export-driver / destination: C: \ driverbackup and press [Enter] .

3rd step:

Check whether all the driver backups that have been created are located in the " C: / driverbackup " folder .

How to restore the backed up drivers

Windows usually detects new drivers automatically and installs them. If a faulty driver update has been installed, you can use this method to restore the previously saved drivers. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the quick start guide .

Open the device manager via Windows search.

Find the device that you want to install a driver for. Make a right click on it and select " Update Driver " from. If the device is not recognized, it will be marked as an unknown device. We choose the SSD in the example.

Click the second option, " Browse my computer for drivers ".

Under " Search for drivers in this location " select the previously specified storage location for the backup. Activate " Include subfolders " as well. Then click on " Next ". Windows searches for appropriate backups and installs the drivers.

Brief instructions: Backing up the driver

  1. Open the command prompt with admin rights. To do this, enter " cmd " in the Windows search and open the command prompt as Admin.
  2. Create the driverbackup folder in the C drive .
  3. Then enter the command DISM / online / export-driver / destination: C: \ driverbackup in the command prompt and press [Enter] .
  4. Finally, check whether the backup was successfully created under " C: / driverbackup ".
