A GIF is a fun way to communicate with friends. They send animated images that support your thoughts, feelings, or mood. WhatsApp allows users to send and receive GIFs. The app even has a library of saved GIFs. As the sender, you can edit the picture like a static picture and add a caption.

Search and send GIFs in WhatsApp

With WhatsApp's internal GIF search for Android and iPhone, you can search for GIFs directly in the app and send them immediately. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

Open WhatsApp and navigate to Chats . Tap an existing chat or start a new one. Then select the smiley face icon next to the message box.

Now tap on " GIF " at the bottom .

A selection of GIFs appears. Scroll down the screen to see more or tap the magnifying glass icon to search for a specific keyword.

4th step:

Once you've found a GIF, tap on it. A preview screen will then appear for you to edit the GIF , including entering a caption . When you are satisfied, press the arrow key to send.

Send external GIFs with WhatsApp

If you cannot find the image you want in WhatsApp's GIF search, you can also use external apps or websites. We use the Giphy app in our instructions , but you can also simply use their website or even a completely different site, such as Tenor or Gyfcat . Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions ..

1st step:

Open the Giphy app and tap the magnifying glass icon at the bottom . You can then enter a desired keyword in the search field above. Please note, however, that Giphy is predominantly English, so you will get further with English keywords than with German.

2nd step:

Then tap on a desired GIF. Now either tap the GIF again to copy it to the clipboard and then paste it into the WhatsApp text field, or go to the paper plane icon to send it directly to WhatsApp.

Then select WhatsApp .

WhatsApp then opens. Now select the chat you want here .

You can then edit the GIF in the preview and add a caption . The GIF is then sent with the arrow .

Create and send your own GIFs

If you cannot find a suitable GIF, you can also send your self-recorded videos as GIFs with WhatsApp for Android and iPhone. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

Open WhatsApp and tap the paper clip (Android) or Plus (iPhone) in any chat .

Then select " Gallery " or " Photo and Video Library ".

Now, in your gallery, tap on the video that you want to convert to a GIF.

You will now see a preview screen where you can edit the video. Here you can then adjust the length of the video by setting the two sliders at the top of the timeline to the desired positions. Make sure that your video can have a maximum length of 6 seconds .

As soon as you reach the 6 seconds, a switch will appear in the top right corner. There you tap on " GIF " to change the format. Now simply send the GIF with the arrow.

  1. Open any chat in WhatsApp and tap on the smiley face next to the message field.
  2. Then select " GIF " below .
  3. You can now search for specific GIFs with the magnifying glass icon .
  4. Then tap on the desired GIF to open the preview . Here you can still edit the GIF and then send it with the arrow.

Quick guide: Sending external GIFs

  1. Open the Giphy app and tap the magnifying glass icon at the bottom .
  2. Now enter in the search box desired word (in English) in order to for a GIF looking .
  3. Then select a GIF and tap the paper airplane icon to send it out.
  4. Then select WhatsApp and choose the chat you want .
  5. In the preview , you can then edit the GIF before sending.

Quick guide: Send your own GIFs

  1. Open any chat in WhatsApp. There, tap on the paper clip (Android) or on the Plus (iPhone).
  2. Then select " Gallery " or " Photo and Video Library ".
  3. Then open a video from your gallery that you want to convert to a GIF.
  4. You can now change the length of the video in the preview in WhatsApp . To do this, move the two sliders at the top of the timeline to the desired positions. The trimmed video cannot be longer than 6 seconds .
  5. Then tap the " GIF " option in the top right below the timeline to switch the format.
  6. You can now send your GIF with the arrow .
