Over the past few years, Google Translate and other translators have gotten better and better. For some time now, functions from Google Lens have also been integrated into Google Translate. You can translate the text on an object directly using Google Translate or Word Lens. All you have to do is scan or take a picture with your smartphone's camera. The translation takes place directly in the image.

Translate picture with an app

There are several apps that you can use to translate images and text on objects directly. One example is Word Lens, another is Google Translate. In our example we are going to use Google Translate, but the principle is the same for apps of this type. It doesn't matter whether you use Google Translate on Android or iOS - you don't need an internet connection either. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions ..

1st step:

First of all, of course, you need an object or an image whose text content you want to translate. It is important that the exposure is right and that the text is really easy to see. In this picture the label of the bag is to be translated. The label only makes up a small part of the overall picture. The picture is too light for this and part of the label is even covered by the piece of plastic.

2nd step:

In this picture the label is much better adapted. It is in the center and the writing above is no longer covered by the plastic connector. The picture is much darker and therefore easier to read. The app recognizes this brightness or a little bit brighter best.

3rd step:

Open the google translator. Automatic language recognition is not available for image translation, so you have to set the language beforehand . In this case the label is in Japanese, so we have set this language above. Then tap on " Camera ". You may now have to agree that Google Translate can really access your camera.

4th step:

The scan will now start automatically. As a rule, the app is set to " translate immediately ". Exactly what is currently being recorded by the camera of your smartphone is then scanned "live". Via " Import "You can also have a previously taken picture translated. Please note that the translation does not always run optimally. Two places are marked in the picture where the app did not work properly. The upper arrow points to" Cotton " Unfortunately, this word is not easy to read. The app always tries to adjust the font size roughly to that of the original text. This is why the word here is distorted. The lower arrow points to "Bell". This is actually the Japanese word for bell Depending on how the cell phone was held, "Bell" or the German word "Glocke" was displayed. Sometimes the translator simply jumps into English on his own. Most of the time, the translation is still sufficient for you to at least roughly understandwhat is written on your picture.

quick start Guide

  1. Open the google translator . Select a language and then tap the camera icon . You may now have to agree to allow Google Translate to access your camera.
  2. As a rule, the app is set to " translate immediately ". In this mode, all you have to do is point your smartphone at the subject to be translated so that the text can be easily recognized by the camera. The other alternative is " import ". This allows you to insert a previously taken photo into Google Translate.
  3. In both cases the text is then scanned. As soon as the app is done with text recognition, the text is translated directly in the photo.
