If you work with Word, you sometimes have to insert special characters that cannot be found on the keyboard. You can insert the sum symbol (Σ), the Greek letter sigma, either using a keyboard shortcut or using the symbol gallery in Word. We'll show you both ways.

Insert sum symbols using the keyboard

There are specific keyboard shortcuts for special characters. Usually you have to hold down the [Alt] key and then enter a number combination in the number pad. The key combination for the sum symbol in Word is [Alt] + [0931] . Alternatively, you can also enter " 2211 " and then press the key combination [Alt] + [C] . This also works without a number pad.

Note: The sigma generated with [Alt] + [0931] is smaller than the other variants shown here.

You can insert symbols in Word. You can also choose the sum symbol. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions ..

1st step:

Click on the desired text passage and switch to the " Insert " tab .

2nd step:

Go to " Symbol " on the right . A box opens. There click on " More symbols ... ".

3rd step:

A new window will open. Select " Mathematical Operators " in the right drop-down menu and scroll down to the summation symbol . Select it and confirm with " Insert ". The character will be inserted into your text in the background. You can then " Close " the window .

Brief instructions: Insert sum symbols using Word

1. Go to the relevant text passage and switch to the " Insert " tab .
2. At the top right click on " Symbol " and then on " More symbols ... ".
3. In the window select " Mathematical operators " in the right drop-down menu . Click on the sum symbol and confirm with " Insert ". The character will be inserted into your text. At the end click on " Close ".
