In Excel, you can activate write protection for individual worksheets or the entire workbook. You can optionally assign a password to this. This is useful because you won't accidentally delete these Excel files and other people won't be able to change the read-only files. To allow this again, however, you have to remove the write protection. We'll show you how to do this in this article.

Remove Excel write protection

If a worksheet is write-protected in an Excel document, it cannot be changed. If, on the other hand, a workbook is write-protected, no spreadsheets can be deleted, added or exchanged. To remove the write protection from your document, follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

Open the relevant Excel file. Switch to the " Check " tab .

In the " Protect " area you can see whether the worksheet or the workbook is write-protected: If the folder is protected, the field has a gray background . If the sheet is protected, the field says " Remove sheet protection ". Click on the respective field.

If the protection is secured with a password , you have to enter this now. Confirm with " OK " and you can edit the data again.

Brief instructions: Unlock Excel write protection

  1. Open the protected Excel file and switch to the " Check " tab.
  2. You can see whether the worksheet or workbook is write-protected in the " Protect " area. If the folder is protected, the corresponding field has a gray background ; if the sheet is protected, it says " Remove sheet protection ". Click on the respective field.
  3. You may now have to enter the password . Then confirm with " OK ".
