Footnotes are shown as superscript numbers in text documents and contain additional text at the end of a page. In scientific papers in particular, footnotes are often used to provide more information or to provide sources. If you create your documents in the open source software OpenOffice, inserting footnotes is very easy.

Insert footnotes in OpenOffice

Inserting footnotes is easy. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

Click in your document where you want to place the anchor for the footnote. Then click on " Insert " at the top and select the option " Footnote / Endnote ... " from the menu .

Now select the option " Footnote " under " Art " . Then click OK .

The footnote is then inserted in the place of your cursor in the text. The numbering starts automatically with the Arabic numbers 1, 2, 3, etc. If you want to change this, you can read on in the next instruction how to edit the footnotes in OpenOffice.

4th step:

At the end of the document page you will then find the appropriate text field for the footnote. You can enter any text here. You will be automatically directed to this field when you click the superscript number in your text.

Edit footnotes in OpenOffice

Once you've added footnotes to your document, you can edit them with just a few clicks and easily change their formatting:

1st step:

Click on the " Extras " category at the top and then select " Footnotes / Endnotes ... ".

In the " Footnotes " tab you can now adjust the formatting of your footnotes in OpenOffice. For example, you can change the numbering here and specify whether the footnotes should be counted for the entire document or, for example, only for a chapter. When you have made all changes, click OK .

  1. Place your cursor where you want the footnote to appear in your document.
  2. At the top under " Insert " go to " Footnote / Endnote ... ".
