SD cards have to be formatted again and again, for example to make space for new photos. You can do this directly on the Mac with a pre-installed utility. You can find out exactly how the formatting works in this article.
How to Format SD Card on Mac
The formatting of SD cards works on the Mac in the same way as with USB sticks with the hard disk service program. Please note that formatting always permanently deletes all data from the SD card. Make sure to back up important data on your laptop before formatting!

1st step
Connect the SD card to the Mac either directly or through an adapter. Then open Disk Utility . This can be found in the folder " Programs " under " Utilities ", or by using the keyboard shortcut [cmd] + [Space] press, " Disk Utility Enter" and [Enter] key. 2nd step
In the sidebar, select the SD card that you want to erase. Then click on " Delete " at the top . 3rd step
Enter a name for the SD card. Select below the format in which the SD card should be formatted. If you only use the card on a MacBook, you can select “ Mac OS Extended (Journaled) ”. However, if you also use the card with other devices such as cameras or Windows computers, you should select " MS-DOS file system (FAT32) ". Then click on " Delete ". 4th step
The SD card will now be formatted. Make sure to keep it connected to your Mac until the formatting finishes. Finally click on “ Done ”. quick start Guide
- Connect the SD card to your Mac and open Disk Utility .
- Select the SD card and click on " Erase " at the top .
- Enter a name for the card and select a format . The " MS-DOS file system (FAT32) " is recommended for cameras and for use with Windows and Mac computers .
- Click on “ Delete ”.
- Wait for the formatting to complete, then click Done .
