If you have a longer Word document that needs to be adapted chapter by chapter, you need the so-called section change. On the one hand, this makes the layout clearer, on the other hand, different formatting can be applied to different sections - e.g. different page numbers. Section changes can be inserted very easily in Word. In this tipps + tricks article, we show you how to do it.

How to insert a section break in Word

Use the mouse cursor to navigate to the point at which the text should be separated. Now go to the " Layout " tab .

2nd step:

Here you will find the option " Breaks ". Click on it and select the section break you want . For example, if you want to number the pages in your document differently, " Next Page " should be selected. If you do not want to change the formatting in Word after the break, select " Continuous ". Alternatively, you can insert a break and continue the document on the next even or odd page. We opt for "Next Page" as an example.

3rd step:

If you have activated the formatting symbols in Word (this works with [Ctrl] + [*] , by the way ), you will now see " Section break (next page) " in the document . You can now edit the formatting separately from the previous section.

quick start Guide

  1. To insert a section break, first navigate with the mouse cursor to the position in the document where the break is to be inserted.
  2. Now go to the " Layout " tab at the top .
  3. Here you select the desired section break under " Breaks ". Either " Continuous " or " Next Page " - depending on whether the formatting should change on the next page.
  4. If the formatting characters ( [Ctrl] + [*] ) are activated, Word will now show you a "section break" in the document.
