You can number your headings in Word to make your document clearer. Here's how to do it..

If you have created a long text document with many paragraphs and headings in Microsoft Word, you can number your headings to give the whole thing a bit of order and to keep things clear. If you want to create an automatic table of contents in Word, it is also a good idea to number headings.

How to number headings in Word

Follow our step-by-step instructions , the quick start guide or the explanatory video .

1st step:

Select a heading and select the third entry from the left in the " Styles " category to mark it as a heading on the first level . For a heading on the second level , according to the 1.1 format, select the fourth entry and for a heading on the third level , i.e. 1.1.1, the fifth entry accordingly. Repeat this process for all headings.

2nd step:

Now click in the category " Paragraph " on the arrow next to the third symbol from the left " List with several levels " and select a desired numbering type . The standard would be the sixth entry under " List library ".

3rd step:

To change the formatting of the headings, select the heading format you have chosen for your headings under " Format templates " and right-click on it. Then select " Change ... ".

4th step:

Now make the required settings and save them with a click on " OK ".

  1. Select a heading and choose a suitable format for your heading under " Format templates ". Repeat for all headings .
  2. Then click under " Paragraph " on the arrow next to the third symbol from the left and select a suitable numbering under " List library " .
  3. Now right-click under " Styles " on the heading format that you have used for your headings and select " Change ... " to adapt the format to your requirements. Make the settings you want, then click OK .
