The offline function of Google Maps can be a very useful thing, especially when you are abroad without mobile internet. You can still navigate using GPS without using up any data volume. Before doing this, all you have to do is download the map of the place or region. This will then be available to you for the next 30 days. In the following we show how you can use Google Maps offline on the Android smartphone and iPhone.

Note: You must have a stable internet connection in order to download maps. So plan in advance which locations should be available offline and download them from the WLAN.

Use maps of cities offline

1st step:

Open Google Maps and then type in the search field the location from which you want to download a map. Then tap on the field marked below to open the additional options of the Google Maps app.

A new page will appear with information about the location and various options. If you tap on " Download " here, the map will be downloaded and made available to you offline from now on.

If you want, you can change the section by moving the map. Finally, tap on " Download ".

The map will now be downloaded. Tap the arrow in the top left to return to the home screen .

Open the menu (☰), which is located in the top left of the app and tap on the item " Offline Maps ".

You will now find the downloaded map here . It is available to you for up to 30 days.

Download map section

It is also possible to download entire map sections from Google Maps . For example, you can save a map the size of the Netherlands offline and access it in the app for up to 30 days . Take a look at our step-by-step instructions or our quick start guide .

Open the menu (☰) in the Google Maps app .

Select the item " Offline Maps " there.

To create a map section , tap on " Adapted map ". The item " Local " shows your current location and surroundings. You can no longer adjust the section here.

Now select a section . You can zoom in and out with two fingers to adjust the map section. Then tap on " Download ".

The map will now be downloaded and can be accessed for up to 30 days on the offline maps.

  1. Open Google Maps on your smartphone and enter the desired location in the search field .
