Would you like to reduce the size of a video file in order to put it online or to send it? Then you should compress them. During compression, the video content and format remain the same, but the quality of the video is partially reduced so that the storage file becomes smaller. In our instructions we use the popular VCL player to reduce the size of a video file.

Shrink video file with VLC player

Follow our step-by-step instructions , the quick start guide or the explanatory video .

1st step:

Open the VLC player. Here you then have to click on the " Media " tab at the top left . Then select the sub-item " Convert / Save ... ".

2nd step:

In the new window, select the file to be compressed via " Add ".

3rd step:

Then click on " Convert / Save " to make the necessary settings.

4th step:

Now define the profile " Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4) ". Then click on the wrench symbol for further settings.

5th step:

In the " Video codec " tab you can set the frame rate below. Enter the value " 24.00 FPS " here .

6th step:

You can still set the frame size in the " Video Codec " tab , but there in the " Resolution " sub-tab . If your video is in 16: 9 format, you need to set Width: 480px and Height: 272px . If your video is in 4: 3 format, enter width: 320px and height: 240px . Finally click on " Save ".

7th step:

Now you have to use " Browse " to enter the location of your reduced video. It is best to choose a different storage location than that of the original video. This is how you can tell the difference between the two files. When you are done, click " Start ". The play bar in the VLC media player will then slowly fill up in blue. Once it is full, your video has been successfully compressed.

quick start Guide

  1. Open the VLC player. Click on the " Media " tab above and then select " Convert / Save ... ".
  2. Now a new window with the title " Open Media " opens . Use " Add " to select the file that you want to compress.
  3. Then click " Convert / Save ".
  4. In the new window you can change the format of the video under " Profile ". Set it to " Video H.264 (MP3 / MP4) ". You can edit further settings using the adjacent tool symbol.
  5. A new window is opening up. In this set the "rider Video Codec click". There you set the frame rate to 24 FPS .
  6. Now you have to click on the " Resolution " tab in the " Video Codec " tab . Here you manually enter a new resolution in pixels. A video in 16: 9 has the resolution width: 480px and height: 272px . For a 4: 3 video, set the format to width: 320px and height: 240px . Then click on " Save ".
  7. Now you have to select a storage location for the target file using " Browse ". It is best to save them in a separate folder so that you can distinguish them from the uncompressed video file afterwards.
  8. Now click on " Start " to begin the compression. As soon as the blue play bar below has run through once, your video is completely compressed.
