The most common method of connecting the iPhone to the computer or iTunes is probably via a USB cable. However, you can also establish a connection via the WLAN. In our article we explain both ways and show you what is possible with which connection.

Connect the iPhone with the USB cable

When you connect your iPhone to your computer with a USB cable , the battery is charged and you can access your photos . The " iTunes " program is required for further functions . With iTunes , you can among other things, back up data , music transferred to the iPhone and updates perform. This is how the connection works:

  1. Download iTunes (e.g. from heise Download: https://www.heise.de/download/product/itunes-18786/download) and install it if you do not already have the program on your computer.
  2. Connect your iPhone to the computer using the USB cable and wait until it appears in iTunes as a small iPhone icon in the bar in the upper left corner.
  3. Unlock your iPhone and confirm the trustworthiness of the connected computer.
  4. Now click on the iPhone symbol in the bar and manage the iPhone's media there or make updates .

If you would like to synchronize with iTunes next time without a cable , there is a practical iPhone function for this. It is possible to connect via a WiFi network . To do this, you have to make a few settings in iTunes and connect your iPhone to the computer again using the USB cable.

Open iTunes and connect your iPhone to your computer with a USB cable . Click on the iPhone symbol in the top left of the bar.

On the left, under " Settings " to " Overview ". Then, under the item " Options", check the box next to " Synchronize with this iPhone via WLAN ". Finally click on " Apply ".

On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > iTunes WiFi Sync . Make sure your computer and iPhone are connected to the same WiFi network and that your iPhone is connected to a power source. Then click Sync Now and wirelessly manage your media or perform updates.

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer with a USB cable and open iTunes .
  2. Click on the iPhone icon in the top left of the bar .
  3. On the left under " Settings "> " Overview " you will find the option " Synchronize with this iPhone via WLAN ". Sat here a hook for activation.
  4. Click Apply in the lower right corner .
  5. Make sure your iPhone and computer are connected to the same WiFi network. Your iPhone should also be connected to a power supply .
  6. You can now tap on " Synchronize now " under " Settings "> " General "> " iTunes WiFi Sync " on the iPhone and thereby connect the two devices.
