If you want to install programs on a new computer or have to use a third-party computer, it can be an advantage to know about your operating system. If you are unsure whether you have Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7 installed, there is a general procedure for determining the version.

Note: With newer systems, you can call up the relevant information window directly using the key combination [Windows] + [Pause] . Alternatively, you can also use " Run " ( [Windows] + [R] ) and enter winver . If that doesn't work for you, try the following method:

  1. To do this, you need to go to the control panel. With the newer Windows versions you can simply enter " Control Panel " under Start (from Windows 8 the small Windows symbol in the lower right corner of the taskbar) in the search bar. Alternatively, you can also find the control panel via the menu.
  2. Once you have opened the Control Panel, go to " System and Security ".
  3. Now go to the point " System ". You should now be presented with the basic information about your system . Here you can read out your Windows edition, your system type (32- or 64-bit - especially important when installing programs) and some other information.
