If you want to physically hold a WhatsApp chat in your hands, you can easily print it out. In the following tipps + tricks article, we explain how you can do this in just a few steps.

Note: If you have installed the latest WhatsApp version, you can no longer export individual chat histories since December 2019. But you can still make a backup of all your WhatsApp data. You can find more information on updating and removing the chat history export here.

Tip: If you only want to print out very few lines of your chat, you can also take a screenshot of them. You can then send this as an image to a printer using your smartphone or print it out using a computer.

1st step:

Open WhatsApp, select the conversation that you would like to print and now tap on the three-dot menu in the upper right corner .

2nd step:

Then select the bottom item " More " under Android . This is not necessary with the iPhone

3rd step:

You will now see further options for this chat. Tap " Export Chat ".

4th step:

Now select a medium via which you want to export the text file. The best way to do this is to use your email app and email the file to yourself. Other media, such as Google Drive, of course also work.

5th step:

Now all you have to do is download the .txt file from the email attachment . Then open it on the computer and print out the file from it. If your smartphone is connected to a printer, you can also download and print the attachment from the smartphone. You can also download attached media. These are then sent in the appropriate file format. An image that was uploaded to WhatsApp in .jpg format is then exported again in .jpg format.

Tip: You just want to print out a few lines or bits of conversation? Just take a screenshot. You can then send this image directly to a printer with the iPhone or print it out on the desktop computer.

1st step:

Open WhatsApp and go to the chat that you want to print out. Tap the contact name shown above.

2nd step:

In the next step, select " Export chat ".

3rd step:

Now you have to decide whether you also want to add media (e.g. sent images) or not.

4th step:

Finally, all you have to do is decide which medium you want to use to save the chat. It is best that you email the whole thing to yourself.

5th step:

All you have to do is download the attachment to this email . For a chat without media, this is a .txt file. So you can print out the chat directly. Possible media as attachments are also sent in the corresponding file format. For example, an image that was uploaded to your conversation in .png format will be downloaded again as a .png image.

Quick guide: Print WhatsApp chat history for iPhone and Android

1. Open the conversation in WhatsApp that you want to print.
2. In Android, tap the three- dot menu in the upper right corner, then select " More ".
   On the iPhone, you'll have to press the name of your WhatsApp contact instead .
3. Now tap on " Export Chat ".
4. An overview opens where you can export the chat anywhere. The best thing to do is to select your e-mail program and send you the history by e-mail.
5. This email then contains a .txt file in which the chat history is displayed in text form. You then have to download this and print it out from your mobile phone or computer. Downloaded media are added as attachments in the appropriate file format. In this way, you will also receive .jpg images in the export as .jpg images.
