Some PayPal payments have fees. It is not always immediately clear when and in what amount these fees are due. However, the following two questions can quickly explain whether fees are charged for your transaction and how high they are.

What kind of payment is it?

If you send an amount via "Friends & Family" via PayPal, PayPal does not charge any fees. The situation is different when it comes to paying for goods or services. If you only want to pay these, you will not incur any further fees.

However, if you receive money as payment via PayPal, PayPal fees apply. These are automatically deducted from the amount received. Usually this fee can be calculated as follows:

€ 0.35 per transaction plus 2.49% of the amount

For a transaction of € 10, fees would be around 60 cents (35 cents base fee + 25 cents as 2.49% of the amount).

A business PayPal account is also required for business transactions. The fees for this vary and can be found in the fee table on the PayPal website .

What currency do you pay in?

As a rule, there are no further fees for payments in euros. However, if you send money in a different currency, such as dollars, conversion fees may apply. Normally, PayPal is based on the current exchange rate, but sometimes sets it a little worse than it actually is.

For example, at a current exchange rate of 1 € to 1.08 $, PayPal can use an exchange rate of 1.06 $. So you have to pay a little more than would actually be necessary at the current exchange rate. Usually, however, these amounts are so small that it is not noticed or is too expensive..
