Metered connections promise a volume limit for Internet access under Windows 10 . The function is more familiar from smartphones, the bandwidth of which is limited from a certain amount of traffic. If you do not want to load your Windows system unnecessarily in order to save the data volume booked, a clocked connection can help. What it is and how to set up such a connection for your PC in the network can be read in this tipps + tricks article.

What is a metered connection?

The term " metered connection " describes an Internet connection with a specified data limit. Cellular data connections are clocked by default. If a certain monthly volume is reached, the internet speed is limited. Windows 10 PCs are normally operated in WLAN with unlimited bandwidth. But what if you only have a limited internet volume or are connected to your smartphone via a hotspot? This is exactly where the solution to activate the metered connection under Windows comes into play. Once the setting has been set, the automatic downloads of the largest data hogs in WiFi or Ethernet are deactivated under Windows 10.

The set limit prevents, for example, the following data-intensive actions on the Internet:

  • Windows updates are no longer loaded if they do not have a high security priority.
  • Automatic uploads to cloud storage like OneDrive will be deactivated.
  • Downloads from the Windows Store are interrupted and no longer synchronized in the background.
