When correcting a typo in Word, do you suddenly overwrite the next letter? In Microsoft Word there is a function that always overwrites the character to the right of the cursor. In this tipps + tricks article, we will show you how to deactivate the function.

Deactivate overwriting

The overwrite function is actually deactivated by default. If this is not the case, accidentally pressing the [Ins] key is enough and the text entry no longer works as usual. First try to deactivate overwrite mode by pressing the [Ins] key again. If that doesn't work, follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

First go to the " File " tab in Word . For Word 2007 and older versions go to the Office icon and then to " Word Options ".

2nd step:

Then click on " Options " on the left .

3rd step:

In the " Word Options " window, switch to the " Advanced " area. Then remove the check mark next to " Use the insert key to control the overwrite mode ". To exit, click OK .

Note: If you would like to reactivate the overwrite function, follow the same route and then tick the appropriate box. If you want the function to be activated permanently, check the box next to " Use overwrite mode "..

quick start Guide

  1. In Word, first go to " File ".
  2. Then click on " Options ".
  3. In the newly opened window, go to " Advanced " and uncheck " Use the insert key to control the overwrite mode ". Confirm your setting by clicking " OK ".
