Wearing protective masks is becoming standard in Germany. But if you want to unlock your smartphone in public using face recognition, there is a problem: With your face half covered, you will no longer be recognized and you will have to enter your PIN instead. But before you disable face recognition entirely, there is a trick you can try - the "alternate appearance".

Face ID on the iPhone despite the protective mask

You can try to configure an alternative appearance with a mask for Face ID. To do this, follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions .

1st step:

Open iPhone Settings and tap " Face ID & Passcode ".

2nd step:

Then enter your code to unlock the iPhone.

3rd step:

Now tap on " Configure alternative appearance " ...

4th step:

... and then on " Let's go ".

5th step:

Now hold the mask halfway in front of your face and follow the instructions on your iPhone. This may not work the first time, just try something around until your iPhone recognizes you. If everything worked, you should now be able to unlock your iPhone with Mask.

Unlock Android despite protective mask

You can save an alternative appearance on Android devices with face recognition. If you do this with the mask on, it should still be possible to unlock your mobile phone in the future despite the protective mask. Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions ..

Note: The names of the menu items can differ from device to device. Most of the time, however, they are similar and the path is the same everywhere.

1st step:

Open the settings of your smartphone and tap on " Biometrics & Password " / " Biometric data and security ".

2nd step:

Then go to " Facescan " / " Face Detection ".

3rd step:

Now tap on " Register alternative look " / " New alternative look ".

4th step:

Now put on your protective mask , tap on " Register your face " and follow the instructions on your smartphone to configure face recognition.

1. Open the settings , tap on " Face ID & Passcode " and enter your passcode.
2. In the Face ID settings, tap on " Configure alternative appearance " and then on " Let's go ".
3. Now fold your face mask in half and cover only half of your face with it . Then follow the instructions on your iPhone to set up a new Face ID.
