If you have a FritzBox, it makes sense to activate the NAS function. A NAS is convenient network storage that you can use to store files that you want other family members or your other devices to access, for example. We explain how to set up FritzNAS:

Note: In order to be able to set up FritzNAS, you must have created a user beforehand. You can find out how to create a Fritz! Box user on the router manufacturer's website.

Increase FritzNAS memory

  1. The memory supplied with the FritzBox is very small, which is why you first need a USB memory device, ideally a USB stick.
  2. Plug this into the USB port on the FritzBox. The faster it is, the faster the NAS will work.

Set up FritzNAS

  1. After you have set up your FritzBox (instructions in this article), open the administration interface of your FritzBox in your Internet browser via http://fritz.box .
  2. In the menu on the left on the page go to " Home Network " and then click on " Storage (NAS) ".
  3. Put a tick in front of the option " Storage (NAS) active " to activate the NAS function of the FritzBox.
  4. In the menu on the left side of the page go to " Home Network " again and then click on " USB Devices ".
  5. Ideally, you don't have to do anything anymore: the stick is already connected, active and set up. The NAS should now automatically appear in your home network, you can access it with Windows, MacOS or Linux.

Optimize FritzNAS speed

  1. So that the USB stick can work at maximum speed, you should now click on the " USB settings " tab under " Home network " and " USB devices " .
  2. Check “ Energy saving function active ” to put the memory into sleep mode when not in use.
  3. Also set the item " Power Mode USB 3.0 " for both USB connections , if available on your FritzBox model. As a result, the FritzNAS works at maximum speed.

Note: It is possible that the internal data processing in the network is too slow, so that the data cannot be processed faster even with a USB 3.0 connection.
