Under Windows 10, partitions can be created relatively easily on hard drives. For example, it is advisable to create a separate partition for the operating system. But it looks different on a USB storage medium such as a stick.

Normally, a separate partition for the operating system of the stick is created directly from the factory. However, this is hidden. In the past, only a single partition on a USB stick could be recognized. Since the Creators Update in April 2017, Windows has recognized the content of all partitions on a USB storage medium.

Create a partition on the USB stick

There are various tools for partitioning. Since the Creators Update in April 2017, a USB stick can also be partitioned using on-board tools. This works via the disk management and is similar to the process of partitioning other volumes. Before doing this, make sure that the USB stick to be partitioned is inserted in the computer.

Follow our step-by-step instructions or take a look at the brief instructions ..

1st step:

Open Computer Management under Windows 10. You can get there by right-clicking on the Windows menu and selecting " Disk Management ". Alternatively, you can also press the shortcuts [Windows] + [X] and then [D] or use the Windows search.

2nd step:

First select the inserted USB stick. In our case this is simply called "Volume" and currently only contains one NTFS partition. Right-click on the USB stick and select " Shrink Volume " from the selection menu .

3rd step:

You can adjust the space available for shrinking. Then confirm by clicking on " Reduce ".

4th step:

Now select the unallocated partition with a right click and click on " New Simple Volume ".

5th step:

Follow the wizard up to the selection shown above. Here you specify a drive letter for the new partition and click on " Next r".

6th step:

In the next step, select the desired file system for the new partition and click " Next " again.

7th step:

Finally, you will receive a summary of the new partition on your USB stick. Confirm its creation with " Finish ". You should now see two drives from a USB stick in your Windows Explorer.
Note: You can only reduce base volumes that either have no file system or the NTFS file system.
